| 3 p.m. - Sept. 14 - Hazards, health and safety risks remain inside the burned areas |
|
Hazards remain inside the burned areas of the fire perimeter
Residents of the evacuated areas and contractors working with residents in those areas are advised that, while the fire line has been completely 'contained,' many hazards and health & safety concerns remain within the fire perimeter. The primary concern at this time is the safety and security of residents going into those areas which have sustained significant infrastructure losses from the fire.
The county also wants to maintain open access for emergency personnel and firefighters still working in the area. Fire recovery efforts are underway, and our emergency personnel and firefighters appreciate having unobstructed access to those areas that pose a risk for further fire activity.
While active fire conditions have been mostly extinguished, much of the scorched ground is still warm or hot to the touch, and there remain many obstacles and dangers within the entire burned area. These include: downed power lines and poles, fire hot spots, infrastructure damage to roads and rights of way, lack of working utilities (phone, water, electricity), concerns about potable water quality and propane tank integrity, and exposed mine shafts (some of which continue to smolder).
Note: The term 'containment' does not mean that the fire is completely out. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group defines the definition of ‘contained’ as follows: The status of a wildfire suppression action signifying that a control line has been completed around the fire, and any associated spot fires, which can reasonably be expected to stop the fire’s spread.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is working on a plan to allow residents to register for a pass to go back into the burn area when specific areas are open for residents to visit their properties. At this time, no decisions have been made about where and when residents should go to register for this purpose, but we will post that information here and send a release to the media immediately when that information is available.

While the active fire conditions have improved, there remain many obstacles and dangers within the burned area. These include: downed power lines and poles, hot fire spots, infrastructure damage to roads, lack of working utilities, and exposed mine shafts. We also need to make sure we keep open access for emergency personnel and firefighters still working in the area.

Specifically, cyclists should refrain from trying to access roads in and around the following areas:
• Lee Hill Road • Lefthand Canyon Road • Old Stage Road • Sunshine Canyon Road • Fourmile Canyon Road • Sugarloaf Road

| 8:50 a.m. - Sept. 11, 2010 - Forest area closures |
|
Forest Service closes area due to Fourmile Canyon Fire
The Boulder Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests has temporarily closed all entry on National Forest System lands north from Boulder Canyon (Colorado Highway 119) to South Saint Vrain Canyon (Colorado Highway 7) and east of the Peak to Peak Highway (Colorado Highway 72). Private landowners, members of the media and private contractors (such as those working on private property or for utility maintenance) are exempt from the restriction.
Boulder District Ranger Christine Walsh said, “This closure is necessary to protect public safety in close proximity to the Four Mile Canyon Fire. The fire is behaving very erratically at times; as winds and weather conditions shift the fire could move in a new direction at a moment’s notice.”
Fire danger is currently rated “very high” in Boulder County. Although fire restrictions are not in effect, visitors to other areas of the national forest are asked to be extremely careful with campfires to avoid further wildfire ignitions. If you use a fire, never leave campfires unattended, even for a few minutes. Pour on plenty of water and stir it into the coals until all materials are cool to the touch with your bare hand.

City continues to monitor wildfire, thanks community for its preparedness
In light of a red flag wind warning that remains in effect until later this evening, City of Boulder officials are continuing to carefully monitor the Fourmile Canyon wildfire. Until this existing weather pattern passes, the city remains on alert and encourages residents to do the same.
Fire Chief Larry Donner is communicating closely with county and federal officials, as well as city firefighters who are working the blaze, to stay informed about the most current developments. City firefighters are prepared to implement a structure protection plan that has been developed should it become necessary to protect homes and other buildings in the city.
“We feel very fortunate that despite the winds we experienced last night the firefighting crews in the county were able to keep the fire from spreading. We remain incredibly appreciative of their efforts,” said City Manager Jane S. Brautigam. “At the same time, I want our community to know that we are standing ready if today’s weather conditions make the fire less predictable.”
City officials also wish to thank the community for its vigilance and the preparations that residents made yesterday in anticipation of possible city evacuations in the neighborhoods west of Broadway from and including Spruce Street on the south to the city limits just outside Dakota Ridge on the north. Many residents cleared their yards, initiated conversations about evacuations and sought more information.
“The response we saw yesterday once again underscored the strength of our community. When we give Boulder residents information, they respond, and they did so overwhelmingly. That kind of cooperation is invaluable in an emergency,” Brautigam said. “We encourage residents to remain vigilant, and we pledge to continue to keep them informed.”

City clarifies earlier advisory; area of concern is north of Spruce Street
As the City of Boulder works with county, state and federal officials on the potential of high winds later tonight and into the early morning hours, it has received a number of questions about specific geographical areas of concern within city limits. No evacuations are currently in place in the city. Should that change, the city will take immediate action to notify its residents.
Given the unpredictable nature of fire, especially in high winds, the city would urge all residents to remain tuned to local news stations and monitor updates that are being posted to www.boulderoem.com.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is providing this information to residents who have been affected by the fire. The addresses listed below are of houses that the Sheriff's Office has identified as destroyed by the Fourmile Canyon Fire. These addresses were determined from only 5-10% of the burned area, as that is the only area that could be safely surveyed today. Some parts of the burned area are more densely populated than others. In most cases, Sheriff’s deputies were able to identify addresses by the homes' mailboxes, some of which are grouped with other mailboxes, so while we intend this to be an accurate list of addresses, we are working under difficult conditions in determining the actual address of each home.

Emergency crews will be allowed to utilize camping equipment for the duration of the closure.
The public will not be allowed access to the Reservoir during this time. This includes pedestrians, bicyclists and all vehicles through all entry points. The Boulder Reservoir location was chosen because of its proximity to the Incident Command Post at the Boulder County Regional Fire Training Center.
“We know the Boulder Reservoir is a popular destination this time of year, but this closure is necessary to help the courageous firefighting crews who are working this very difficult situation,” Brautigam said. “As a city, our hearts go out to our neighbors who have lost their homes, and we are pleased to be able to provide whatever support we can to the emergency personnel on the front lines."

The Fourmile Canyon wildfire has grown to at least 7,100 acres in size and forced the mandatory evacuation of more than 3,000 residents living in the steep, rugged and heavily forested foothills west of the City of Boulder. Teams are on site to catalog burned structures and to investigate the fire’s cause and origin.
More than 200 firefighters, from at least 35 local, regional and national agencies are working to contain the active fire. Eight air tankers and three helicopters joined the effort. Due to a thick inversion layer limiting visibility, air tankers were unable take off Tuesday morning, but dropped more than 90,000 gallons of fire retardant later in the day.
Communities east of the Peak-to-Peak Highway, south of Lefthand Canyon Drive, west of Olde Stage Road and north of Boulder Canyon Drive (Colo. Highway 119) will remain evacuated until further notice. Residents will be informed when any evacuations have been lifted.

More than 100 firefighters manning 35 engines from 30 local agencies worked to contain the fast-moving, wind-blown fire on Monday. Three aircraft also joined the fight flying 18 sorties and dropping 40,000 gallons of fire retardant on the fire. Additional aircraft are expected to join the effort on Tuesday.
Boulder Canyon Drive reopened to traffic Monday evening, however, Fourmile Canyon Drive and Sugarloaf Road remain closed.
