6/27 9:30 a.m. - Update on Maxwell Fire (next update expected at 3:30 p.m.)

Update on Maxwell Fire:

  • Fire is 25% contained
  • Fire started ¼ mile from shooting range, but cause has not been identified
  • Fire size is estimated at 100 acres, moving in a NW direction w/ spot fires
  • Last night, firefighters created a back burn to protect south end of fire so fire would not cross Lefthand Canyon (to protect Boulder Heights)
  • With overnight high humidity, fire laid down, no growth in size
  • 80 firefighters are working the fire, including two hot shot crews (two additional hot shot crews are expected later today)
  • Type 2 helicopter will be arriving today to get a better estimate of fire/size
  • 2 single engine air tankers available
  • 2 heavy tankers available
  • After helicopter reconnaissance, the Incident Command Team will evaluate and use tankers as needed
  • Objective is to keep fire north of Lefthand, south of Spruce Gulch, west of Carnage Canyon, east of Castle Gulch
  • No structures/homes are threatened at this time
  • Firefighters are dealing with steep and rocky terrain, making additional containment difficult
  • Road closures remain the same – Lefthand closed at U.S. 36 to James Canyon Drive (access to local residents only from U.S. 36 to Olde Stage Rd.)
  • 2 or 3 homes remain in the mandatory evacuation area

There will be a media conference today at 3 p.m. at Olde Stage Rd & Lefthand Canyon Drive. Enter via Lee Hill Drive in North Boulder and proceed to Olde Stage Road.
