Chief Herold and DA Dougherty brief the community at press conference

Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold shared:

  • 26 agencies have been working 24 hours a day to investigate. Over 167 individuals have contributed more than 3,000 hours of work so far.
  • The suspect is charged. The firearm was a semi-automatic Ruger which was purchased legally from a shop in Arvada.
  • Investigators did a walk through of the complex crime scene yesterday.
  • We have seen such an outpouring of community support and grief; and the victims advocate structure we have put into place is something “I have never seen in my career.”

District Attorney Michael Dougherty shared:

  • Police charged into the store immediately and faced “a significant amount of gunfire;” they absolutely saved lives and put their own lives at risk. There was significant danger to people in the store and the community: “That danger ended with the response of law enforcement.”
  • The commitment to ensure justice is done; suspect is being held without bond; court will announce next hearing date next week. The defendant is charged with 10 counts of 1st degree murder and one count of attempted murder; more attempted murder counts are expected. Defense and prosecutors will need time to go through all the evidence; defendant has constitutional right to a fair trial.
  • Cites tremendous outpouring of support; and hopes and requests for that support to continue throughout the upcoming months, year, and beyond until justice is done.
  • We stand shoulder to shoulder united” as law enforcement and criminal justice professionals. Victims’ advocates are playing a major role as well. “There is a lot of work that remains to be done.”
